Kirin Wachter-Grene is Assistant Professor of English in the Department of Liberal Arts and Coordinator of the First Year Seminar Program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Washington (UW) with a focus on 19th-21st century African American literature and gender and sexuality studies, and an MA in Liberal Studies from The Graduate Center, CUNY. In 2015 she received a UW English Department Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award. She is currently at work on her manuscript, titled Into the Scorpion Garden: Samuel R. Delany and Transgressive African American Literature, and is guest-editing a special issue of The Black Scholar to commemorate the journal’s 50th anniversary. She has articles and reviews published in African American Review, The Black Scholar, Callaloo, The International Journal of Diverse Identities, and InVisible Culture.
