Texts to be purchased for the 2019 Language and Thinking Program 

  • Frankenstein: The 1818 Text by Mary Shelley (Penguin Books) ISBN 9780143131847. Please read from pages 3-216, which begins with the "Preface."
  • Darwin: A Norton Critical Edition edited by Philip Appleman (W.W. Norton & Company) Third Edition, ISBN 0-393-95849-3. Please read the selections from The Voyage of the Beagle on pages 67- 81 and the selections from The Origin of Species on pages 95-135 and 158-174. 
  • Sophocles I: Antigone, Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus by Sophocles, edited by David Grene and Richmond Lattimore (The University of Chicago Press) Third Edition, ISBN 978-0-226-31151-7. Students should purchase this book, and bring it with them to the August Program, but there will be no assigned readings from this book before the start of the Program in August.

The edition matters: rely on the ISBN to be sure you are getting the correct edition.
