Translating Climate Change: Beyond Disbelief and Dystopia
Professor Eban Goodstein (Bard Center for Environmental Policy)
Wednesday, August 16, 2023 9–10:30 am
Campus Center, Multipurpose Room Following yet another summer of record-breaking global temperatures, climate change science still translates quite differently to different groups of people within the politically polarized environment of the United States. Climate change disbelief (or a belief that scientific predictions of climate change are wildly exaggerated) is common on the right. At the same time, a subset of Americans believes that it is too late to take action to slow climate change, and that we face an inevitable and near-term global climate apocalypse. As a result of this polarization, climate scientists and policy-makers have spent a lot of time working on ‘climate communication’, or the translation of climate science and solution strategies into language that can move people into productive conversation about ways forward. This presentation will introduce useful metaphors like ""climate repair"", and enable you to have more effective talks about stabilizing the climate with both your climate-denying uncle at Thanksgiving, as well as your climate-depressed roommate next week. For more information, call 845-758-7097, or e-mail [email protected].
Olin Auditorium Emily Johnson is an artist who makes body-based work. She is a land and water protector and an organizer for justice, sovereignty, and well-being. Emily is a Bessie-Award winning choreographer, Guggenheim, Native Arts and Cultures Foundation, and United States Artists Fellow, and a recipient of the Doris Duke Artists Award. She is based in Lenapehoking/New York City. Emily is of the Yup'ik Nation, and since 1998 has created work that considers the experience of sensing and seeing performance. Her dances function as portals and care processions, they engage audienceship within and through space, time, and environment – interacting with a place's architecture, peoples, history, and role in building futures. Emily is trying to make a world where performance is part of life, where performance is an integral part of our connection to each other, our environment, our stories, our past, present, and future. For more information, call 845-758-7097, or e-mail [email protected].
Campus Center, Multipurpose Room No character in English literature has given rise to a wider array of interpretations than Frankenstein's creature. In fields like human rights, gender studies, political studies, and critical race theory, he is frequently invoked to represent the injustices faced by immigrants, orphans, women, people of color, the incarcerated, the enslaved, people with disabilities, and LGBT people. Intelligent, articulate, sensitive, self-aware, and capable of deep emotion yet summarily rejected by his creator and spurned by everyone he encounters, it is no surprise that the creature has become such an apt metaphor for the diverse range of persons that society persecutes and excludes. What is surprising, however, are the lengths to which Mary Shelley goes to underscore the similarities between Victor Frankenstein and his creation. Both are driven by a passionate desire for knowledge. Both find solace and inspiration in the natural world. And both are locked in an inexorable cycle of mutual recrimination and mutual pursuit. Given their obvious biological differences and radically disparate upbringings, neither nature nor nurture can account for the profound kinship linking creature and creator. Who then, we are forced to ask, is the real monster? And what are the criteria we use to make this determination? For more information, call 845-758-7097, or e-mail [email protected].

Professor Jonathan Becker (Politics) and Erin Cannan (Center for Civic Engagement)
Tuesday, August 22, 2023 11 am – 12:30 pm
Campus Center, Multipurpose Room How can students and colleges translate thoughts into action when authoritarians in the United States and abroad threaten basic democratic rights? This talk will focus on voting rights, which are increasingly challenged across the country. It will address strategies and tactics from Bard's quarter-century-long struggle over student voting, which saw victories in four major lawsuits and resulted in a change in New York State law to make voting easier for students across the state, and incorporate lessons from activism across the country, including the experience of Bard's partners in a Mellon Foundation supported project (and joint course) on student voting from three Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tuskegee, Prairie View A & M and North Carolina A & T. It will more broadly address challenges to voting rights that are felt across the United States, and strategies to thwart them. What lessons do we take from these fights for other rights that are under threat, be they related to education, gender identity or race? For more information, call 845-758-7097, or e-mail [email protected].

What Big Tech Won't Tell You And Why: Life in the Age of AI
Professor Valerie Barr (Computer Science)
Tuesday, August 22, 2023 2–3:30 pm
Campus Center, Multipurpose Room The story usually told of the computing industry is this: some brilliant whiz-kids in their garages came up with new and cool tech, found people to back it, and used it to make life better for everyone! Then they kept that spirit alive by funding more tech development through venture capital companies. In the first part of this session we'll look behind that standard story, examine the ugly reality of parts of the development of modern computing, consider the impact of some of the ‘don't be evil’ businesses, and then talk about generative AI and alternative views on whether AI poses an ‘existential risk’ to humanity. The second part of the session will be an interactive conversation about what students think they all should know about technology and computing in order to be better equipped for life, especially education, in this era of generative AI. For more information, call 845-758-7097, or e-mail [email protected].
